This photoshoot, taken in Moab, Utah, focuses on isolating individual formations to highlight their unique structures and textures. By emphasising colour within a greyscale environment, the images draw attention to the natural reds and oranges of the stone, creating a visual contrast that enhances the sculptural quality of each formation. This technique echoes the stark contrast found in classic landscape photography but modernises it by guiding the viewer’s focus through each scene. The intricate erosion patterns, layered sediment, and dynamic angles of the rock formations become more pronounced, turning these natural monuments into almost abstract works of art.
Beyond aesthetics, this collection aims to capture the grandeur of Moab’s desert landscape, where each rock formation tells a story of time, weather, and geological evolution. By isolating these structures within their vast surroundings, the images evoke a sense of stillness and permanence, inviting the viewer to appreciate the individuality of each formation. Without this isolation, many of these features would be overlooked as they blend in seemlessly with the rest of the environment, almost fully camoflaged.
This photoshoot was a personal project I undertook whilst travelling. The images were taken on an iPhone camera before being edited in Photoshop to create the colour-popping effect.
